RSHE

Relationship, Health and Sex Education

At Lift Newlands, we believe that high-quality Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) plays a vital role in preparing young people for life beyond school. As a specialist SEMH setting, we recognise the importance of supporting pupils to develop healthy relationships, emotional wellbeing, self-awareness and the knowledge needed to make safe, informed decisions.

RSHE is an important part of our wider Newlands Curriculum and is carefully designed to meet the needs of our pupils in an age-appropriate, therapeutic and inclusive way. We provide a safe and supportive environment where pupils can explore key topics, ask questions and develop the confidence to understand themselves and others.

At Lift Newlands, RSHE is delivered through a structured programme from Year 7 to Year 11, ensuring pupils revisit key themes at an age-appropriate level as they grow and develop. Our curriculum covers all statutory requirements and includes learning around:

  • Healthy and respectful relationships
  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Physical health and healthy lifestyles
  • Online safety and digital relationships
  • Personal safety, consent and boundaries
  • Puberty, sexual health and growing up
  • Families, diversity, equality and protected characteristics
  • Preparation for adulthood and independent living

We deliver the NCFE RSHE qualification suite, which provides pupils with meaningful, structured learning and the opportunity to gain recognised accreditation in this important subject area.

Our RSHE Curriculum

Our RSHE programme is structured across five progressive units designed to meet the needs of each year group:

Years 7–8
Pupils complete the Level 1 Award in Relationships, Sex and Health Education, focusing on the foundations of healthy relationships, wellbeing, emotional literacy and personal development.

Years 9–11
Pupils progress through the Level 2 RSHE programme, exploring more complex themes including healthy relationships, consent, sexual health, personal responsibility, online safety and preparing for adulthood.

Teaching is adapted to meet the individual needs of our pupils and reflects the lived experiences and additional vulnerabilities that some young people with SEMH needs may face. Lessons are delivered sensitively by trained staff, with opportunities for discussion, reflection and additional support where needed.

Through RSHE at Lift Newlands, we aim to equip every pupil with the knowledge, confidence and life skills they need to stay safe, build healthy relationships, understand themselves and thrive in the wider world.

Further information about our RSHE curriculum can be found in our RSHE Policy and curriculum overview.
