Mentoring

Mentoring at Lift Newlands

At Lift Newlands, mentoring is a fundamental part of our therapeutic and relational approach to education. We recognise that for many of our students, positive, trusted relationships are the key to engagement, regulation and long-term success. As such, emotional support is woven throughout the school day and delivered through our highly skilled Learning and Behaviour Support Team.

Our mentoring provision provides students with consistent, trusted adults who know them well and understand their individual needs, strengths and barriers. Through personalised 1:1 mentoring, coaching and targeted small-group interventions, staff support students to develop emotional regulation, resilience, confidence, communication skills and positive strategies for managing challenges both in and beyond school.

Support is responsive, flexible and tailored to need. Sessions may be timetabled as part of a planned intervention or provided in the moment to respond to emerging emotional, behavioural or pastoral needs. Mentoring takes place across a range of environments to ensure students feel safe, supported and able to engage, including classrooms, breakout spaces and specialist wellbeing areas such as the gym, Quiet Room, Green Room and HUB.

Importantly, mentoring at Lift Newlands extends beyond the classroom. Staff work alongside students during transitions, off-site activities and, where appropriate, after school, ensuring continuity of support and strengthening relationships. This relational approach helps students to feel safe, understood and empowered, enabling them to thrive, belong and achieve.
